Ask the Experts: I've looked at several Wi-Fi music streaming solutions lately, but none of them allow me to play different tunes in different rooms. Is there anything out there that solves this problem?
Answer: Yes! Sonos just previewed its new Digital Music System, which is really a first in the home streaming music arena. With the Sonos ZonePlayer, you can deliver a wide variety of music formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC (MPEG4), and WAV, to any room in the house. You can customize zones for different playlists, and playback to multiple zones at once.
Music files can be stored on a PC, Mac or network attached storage device, and Internet Radio playback is also supported. The Sonos system uses a dedicated 802.11a network to beam music around the house, and since 802.11a operates on a different frequency than 802.11b/g, you won't have to worry about inteference with your wireless data network.
Even music purists will like the Sonos, since the ZonePlayers in each room have 50 Watt/channel amplifiers that drive your speakers through component-quality audio connections. The wireless controller unit has a color LCD and iPod-like wheel and buttons for selecting music for any zone. The system is modular, so you can add rooms with new ZonePlayers to your network at any time. An introductory bundle of two ZonePlayers and one controller is $1,199, far less than typical distribution amplifiers and whole-house speaker wiring.
