JiWire's Quick Take

Likes
Make and receive Skype calls without a computer, supports most Skype features, voice quality even better than some cell service, intuitive interface, very good Wi-Fi range, miniUSB charger can be powered by laptops.

Dislikes
No web browser for hotspot logins, no way to lock keyboard, poor battery life, can't initiate conference calls, no Skype text messaging, no 911 support, no WPA2 or 802.11x support.

Good for
Skype In/Out users who want the freedom of direct Skype dialing at home or office without a computer.

Bad for
Road warriors who use paid hotspots or those who need wide-area cell-phone-type coverage will be better off using the Skype client with a Windows Mobile phone.

Tom's Networking "All things considered, Netgear's SPH101 is slightly better than the Accton / SMC / EdgeCore / Belkin products, but still plagued by bugs and oddities. The SPH101's biggest claim to fame is its speakerphone, but that advantage is offset by implementation issues that make it marginally usable....however, all of these products remain expensive curiosities and certainly not suited for road-warrior use. Battery time is much too short, the browser-based authentication needed by many commercial hotspots is missing and the hassle and extra weight just don't justify it as a viable business communication tool."

VNUNet.com "You might think the big advantage with this and other Skype wifi handsets is that you can take it out with you, using hotspots located in airports, hotels and coffee shops, but youd be wrong. The SPH101 does not support any wireless network that requires internet browser-based sign on, meaning it wont work in commercial hotspots. Its other limitations are that it does not support Skypes instant-messaging function, cannot initiate conference calls and as it has no camera, obviously doesnt support video calls. You could probably accept these limitations if the cost of the phone were far lower. Call clarity between two Wi-Fi handsets was excellent, although when we then called the same location with the other person using a headset connected to a PC, the quality noticeably dropped. It has a claimed battery life of 30 hours on standby, although ours died from a full charge after only six."
