Help When and Where You Need It
When NetGear redesigned the MR814v2's outside, it also totally revamped the inside, with all-new router software. And the results are just as good. The MR814v2 now puts its help files right on the same page as the settings, so you can read the directions just when you need them. There's also a full manual in PDF format on the CD, but with the help files right there, you'll likely never need to access it.
When you first connect to the router after hooking it up to your computer (directions for which are in an excellent three-step printed installation guide), you'll be presented with the following screen. Newbies can use the Setup Wizard to automatically sense the type of Internet connection, while pros can go directly to the configuration pages to do it themselves.

Doing It Yourself
If you're a router pro, bypass the Wizard and go straight to the Basic Settings page. Here you can input your service provider connection information like IP and gateway addresses, and also spoof your computer's MAC address if needed. (Some ISPs tie access to a specific computer's MAC address; this feature lets you trick the modem into thinking the router is really your computer.)

Securing Your Wi-Fi Net
Once you've made a successful Internet connection, it's time to go a little further and secure your Wi-Fi network by turning on encryption. Again, NetGear makes the process easy by providing setup directions and an explanation of encryption options right there on the page.
You can also choose to set up a wireless card access list, which will only allow specific computers to connect to your network. This is also known as MAC address filtering, since wireless cards are identified by their MAC addresses.

Checking It Twice
If you need to quickly check the settings of your router, the MR814v2's Router Status page makes it easy. It also shows you what firmware you're using, so you can update it if needed. Just click on the "Router Upgrade" menu item to download new software and install it. NetGear updates its firmware regularly with both bug fixes and new features, so be sure to get the latest version when you set up your router for the first time.
