Getting online at most public hotspots, whether free or for pay, is really quite simple. Once you have a Wi-Fi card installed, and log on at a hotspot for the first time, subsequent connections should take just a few seconds to complete. Most times, you'll just enter your password and go. For the first-timer, we've created a step-by-step guide to getting connected to Wi-Fi hotspots on the road. To start, here are a few things you should do before you leave on a trip where you plan to use Wi-Fi. Being prepared means you will be able to get online quickly once you reach a hotspot.

Step 1: Choose a Wi-Fi Adapter

If you already have a Wi-Fi card in your notebook or PDA, skip on to Step 3. If not, check out our Wi-Fi Adapters Buyer's Guide to choose the right card for you. Many newer laptops also have Wi-Fi built-in, so be sure to check before you go out and buy a card.

Step 2: Install Your Card

Follow the card manufacturer's directions on installing drivers and setting things up. If you have a home or office Wi-Fi network, try to connect there to test things out before you leave on a trip, or try a local Starbucks with Wi-Fi access. Step 3: Download Locations

Now that you've gotten your Wi-Fi adapter all ready to go, don't forget to download JiWire's Portable Hotspot Locator. That way, you won't have to hunt around to find the nearest hotspot, wherever you are. You can search for locations by provider network (T-Mobile, Boingo, Wayport, etc.), type of location (hotel, coffee shop, airport, etc.), and even search for free hotspots if you like.

If you plan to sign up for a hotspot service network on a monthly or yearly subscription basis, such as Boingo or T-Mobile, it will save time to do so before you go. But don't worry if you haven't. You can also sign up at any location.
