JiWire's Quick Take

Likes
Gigabit switch, very good throughput, Wi-Fi Protected Setup, DHCP reservation, very good interoperability with other draft-n equipment, relatively low price.

Dislikes
Disappointing range, dense Web interface, must buy matching cards for top performance.

Good for
Gamers, VoIP users and streaming media addicts who are frustrated with their wireless performance will benefit from the DIR-655's combination of 802.11n, gigabit Ethernet and intelligent QoS.

Bad for
Those who have earlier MIMO routers won't see much of a performance bump except on the wired side due to the gigabit switch; they can wait for certified draft-802.11n products to appear later this year, when prices will also be lower.

PC Magazine "The D-Link DIR-655 has a robust feature set that includes wireless QoS (Quality of Service) monitoring and adjustment. Of the four routers I tested, it was the fastest at transferring data over short distances. But its complex management interface kept me on the fence about whether to recommend it, and I was also disappointed to find that the USB port offers no support for sharing a printer or storage device."

Laptop Magazine "The Xtreme N is a vast improvement over the previous DIR-630 model...In tests, it matched the speed of the DIR-635 nose for nose, running at 130 Mbps from very short distances with no interference, and a respectable 45 Mbps from more typical ranges and with other laptops in the room. Ubicom StreamEngine technology now handles wireless streams better, smoothing VoIP calls and online gaming. With the Gigabit ports, we moved about 3GB of wired data in just three minutes, compared with ten minutes for the Belkin N1 router."
