Most good cell phones these days feature Bluetooth. But not all Bluetooth phones are equal. Look for Bluetooth 1.2 support for the fastest and most reliable headset connections, plus the ability to use the phone as a modem for your laptop. The latest broadband EV-DO and HSPDA phones are perfect for laptop tethering, assuming the carrier allows it (be sure to check). Below we've selected the top Bluetooth smartphones that feature 2.5G or 3G service, and sometimes Wi-Fi too. Two that lack Wi-FI can be upgraded with an SD Wi-Fi card, so you can use them with your home or office wireless networks, as well as on the road.

Palm Treo 700w EV-DO Smartphone (Verizon)

The first Palm device to use the Windows Mobile operating system comes close to the best of both worlds: full, seamless Microsoft Office and Exchange email compatibility, with a healthy dollop of Palm's user interface expertise. The Treo 700w has both Bluetooth and an SD card slot, so you can add Wi-Fi or a memory card to hold all your MP3s. And the built-in Verizon broadband EV-DO service means you'll never need to hunt for a hotspot to get your email and surf the Web.

BlackBerry 8700c (Cingular)

This EDGE BlackBerry from Cingular offers 2.5G speeds of around 130-140Kbps, or about three or four times dialup speeds. Not broadband, but just right for email and a little surfing, which is what any BlackBerry is best at. Berry aficionados will also love the bright high-res color screen (320x240) with auto backlighting, and the dedicated send/end keys. Bluetooth, MP3 ringtones, and speakerphone support round out the package.

Sprint PPC-6700 EV-DO/Wi-Fi Smartphone

The Windows Mobile 5.0-based PPC-6700 is the most capable smartphone to date, with triple-threat EV-DO, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, all in a compact package. Wireless integration is superb and effortless, and it features full MS Office and Exchange support, as with any Windows Mobile device. It also has an excellent slide-out keyboard, good phone quality and a 1.3MP camera. The Verizon version of this phone is the UTStarcom XV6700.

Motorola RAZR V3c (Verizon)

Finally, RAZR lovers get their wish -- a broadband EV-DO cameraphone version from Verizon. It also has an MP3 player with a 72-polyphonic sound engine and 30MB of user storage for your tunes and other data. And of course it features hands-free Bluetooth calling. As slim and stylish as all RAZRs, the V3c comes in metallic pink as well as standard gray.

HP iPAQ hw6515 Mobile Messenger (Cingular)

HP's answer to the Treo is this EDGE Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone. Like the Treo, it boasts Bluetooth, a camera, an SD card slot and a thumb keyboard, but adds GPS capability and a miniSD slot as well. Two slots mean you can add Wi-Fi and memory cards simultaneously. As a quad-band GSM-based phone, the HP can also roam the world.
